ON YOUR BIKE!!!
During the last election you may recall that I ran from Taradale to Napier for 20 days in a row as part of my campaign. It was a great way to get fit and to also be out and about first thing in the morning when people had absolutely no interest in me knocking on their door.
One of the things I noticed while I was running was the small number of people who biked to work. Most mornings I’d count the bikers on one hand. As a result I thought I should try and do something about it. So this week in association with Bike HB and the Radio Network we’ve launched the “Bike to Work Commuter Challenge” in Napier.
For ten work days in a row we want you to join us by getting ‘On your bike’. We’re asking Napier residents to take up the challenge by biking to work over the ten day period. As an incentive ten businesses (each on a different day) have agreed to provide breakfast starting at 7.30am and finishing at 8.00am. On top of that each business has agreed to provide a small prize which will be drawn from those riders present at the breakfast.
First business on Monday was the HB Regional Council; followed by my Electorate office on Tuesday; Heavens Bakery Wednesday; Langley Twigg on Thursday; and Cranked Cycles this Friday. And next week Kathmandu Monday 16th, ANZ Napier Tuesday 17th; Napier City Council (Station Street Carpark)Wednesday 18th; Pak n Save Thursday 19th; and the grand finale at Classic Hits on Friday the 20th
The top prize is airfares for two to Dunedin to go biking on the Otago Rail Trail. Air New Zealand have generously put up the airfares. To be in the draw to win you have to have biked to at least 5 of the 10 breakfasts.
Hawkes Bay is an awesome place to bike with the investment in pathways making a huge difference especially in the weekends.
It’d be great to have more people biking to work. It’s healthy and its good for the environment. I’ll be biking from the Esk Valley so there’s no excuses. Get on your bike!
