Parliamentary Rugby comes to HB…
Before I start, I would like to acknowledge the terrible tragedy in Samoa. My family and staff also extend their heartfelt sympathy to all those who have been affected, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.
Everyone who knows me knows I love sport. Rugby is a big part of my family, and a big part of this country. There’s nothing quite like getting out in the fresh air, getting dirty, and ‘not to mention’ a bit bruised. So when you couple it with supporting a worthy charity it can only be a win, win!
On Sunday the 18th of October, I along with MP’s Craig Foss, Stuart Nash, and Rick Barker will be donning my boots to play in the Parliamentary Rugby team and run touch line against the local Fire Service here in Hawke’s Bay.
This year I am joint team captain, and we will be raising money for Napier based “Back-up Trust”. ‘Back up’ is an organisation who assists people with all types of disabilities to get back into the community. They challenge their clients through a variety of personal development programs, which increase their confidence and self-esteem and they have a great time in the process. I have seen this first hand while helping the Trust in the ‘Round Lake Taupo Challenge’ which was a great experience. If you want to know more about 'Back Up Trust' go to http://www.backup.org.nz/index.php
The Parliamentary Rugby and Netball teams are a fantastic way of showcasing the fact that we can actually work together across the House. Putting aside our differences and getting behind the many great community groups that support New Zealander’s in need, and having a lot of fun in the process.
The team will be playing the Hawke’s Bay Fire Service at Park Island on Sunday 18th of October. Kick-off at 1.00pm. Prior to this the Parliamentary Netball team will be playing an Ex-High Old Girls selection team at the Onekawa Netball Courts at 11.00am.
On a more personal note, my Wairoa Electorate Agent who started this year has also been involved in a freak accident, severely breaking her ankle and will be out of action for a while. The Wairoa office phone has been diverted to my Napier office, so rest assured my other dedicated electorate staff will do their best to handle any problems that come up in the meantime. We wish Mary a speedy recovery.
