Great local response to Tsunami threat
I would like to thank Hawke’s Bay people and our Civil Defense Volunteers for their rapid and appropriate response to this weeks Tsunami threat.
"I was personally thrilled to see our regions response systems react so quickly,"
Although the emergency did not eventuate in our region it was an excellent opportunity to test our readiness and further strengthens our confidence in Hawke’s Bay ability to cope with a Civil Defense Emergency.
"I would like to take the opportunity to express my sadness at the events that have happened in Western Samoa and American Samoa".
Just like Samoa, New Zealand is an island nation and subject to the same risks as our Pacific neighbours, It must be remembered that these islands not only suffered the effects of a tsunami but also a very strong earthquake.
More information is coming to hand on a minute by minute basis but early reports show significant damage and loss of life, it is truly a sad time in Samoa, and I am pleased that the New Zealand Government has quickly pledged support.
"Hawke’s Bay has strong ties with the Samoan community and it is understandably a very worrying time for family members here in New Zealand".
People with ongoing concerns about family members in Samoa can call our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 04 439 8000.
